30-Gallon Drum Dimensions
Regardless of material, 30-gallon drums are roughly 19” in diameter and 29” tall measuring from the outside. They aren’t always cylindrical, however. Some materials can be made into a square or tapered drum design. The inside will lose an inch or two in usable height depending on the type of lid being used. Most 30-gallon drums will have a latching lid of some kind.

Plastic drums
30-gallon plastic drums are made of UV-resistant plastic, making them an effective choice for storing and shipping household goods, non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, as well as other solid and liquid products. If they’re approved by the FDA and USDA, they can also be used to store food and water without fear of contamination. These drums are often made in different colors, which can be useful when organizing a large storage facility.
Steel Drums
A 30 gallon steel drums would be a great choice for shipping hazardous materials. Steel drums that meet safety requirements will have a rust coating on the inside of the drum to prevent any metal corrosion or rust from mixing with any hazardous material. That combined with the durability of the steel ensures that the product can be stored and shipped without posing a threat to safety.
Fiber Drums
Fiber 30 gallon drums are a sustainable, lightweight alternative to metal and plastic storage drums. They’re made from a cardboard or paper composite, often recycled, and can be recycled themselves when no longer needed. That makes them much lighter than other drums. This does make them less durable and protective, which means they’re typically best suited for the storage of dry, solid goods. However, some are also tested and certified for hazardous material storage.
Stainless Steel Drums
30-gallon stainless steel drums are built for storing materials that demand a heavy-duty container. If maintaining product purity is your highest priority, stainless steel is your best bet. Even corrosive materials can be stored in stainless steel drums without rust or contamination. Stainless steel drums are frequently used for food and pharmaceutical storage. They’re also heavily used by fragrance producers.
Salvage drums
A 30 gallon salvage drum can be used to contain a leaky barrel or other storage device containing hazardous materials. They’re designed to hold punctured or corroded containers that may spill, containing the mess within the salvage drum. They’re typically made of UV-protected polyethylene to prevent sunlight from entering the container. They can also come with wheels or other attachments to make transport of leaking barrels easier and safer.
Reconditioned drums
Some manufacturers offer reconditioned 30-gallon steel and plastic drums that have been repaired and repainted for reuse. Before buying a reconditioned drum, you’ll want to be sure that it meets all current safety regulations. If they do, then they’re just as functional and safe as a brand-new drum at a cost savings of 30-50%. This can be a great option if you’re buying a large number of drums and are looking for a safe way to reduce costs.
